Self control is a core concept in today’s society. People who have self control have the ability to not act on all of their urges. Most of us have self control and that is why it is not normally an issue. But every now and then you encounter someone who doesn?t seem to have it. Most likely these are the people who are in the news for committing crimes. But it is easy to assume that people who lack self control are purely criminals. But the issue comes up in other places, such as at the dinner table. Lack of self control, for example, can lead to overeating.

To some people, self control may seem like a negative thing. But actually it is something that can bring about balance. All it basically means is that you keep your destructive urges under control. That means anything that can cause you or someone else harm is not acted upon. For example, if someone makes you angry, your first instinct may be to hit them. But, that is not something that encourages good self control. If you have self control, you will stop yourself from hitting the person and try to calm your anger.

If you think that you need some help with self control, you have a few options. An addiction is an example of something that will break your self control. An addiction to food, cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, food etc are all manifestations of a lack of self control. And in order to break yourself of an addiction, it can take some extra help. Determine what in your life needs improving. In what areas can you increase your self control? Those are the areas that you will work on. Find a therapist or a specialist to help you develop greater self control.

Other people use their faith and religious beliefs to help them gain self control. By adopting a system of beliefs, this can be used as a tool to help control destructive urges. For example, in Christianity, believers are instructed to control themselves and not sin. Living by these rules is a good way to help encourage self control. But, you don’t need to have a system of beliefs to encourage self control. You can do it through your own will.
